My professional background is as a qualified nurse and midwife and I have worked in many parts of the world during my varied career as a nurse and a fund raiser, including the USA, France, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Bahrain, Brunei, Zambia and Botswana. This has given me a huge experience and appreciation of other cultures and I am most mindful to work appropriately within cultural boundaries, wherever necessary.
Since returning to Scotland, I have qualified as a Scottish Tourist Guides Association, Blue Badge Tourist Guide, which involved undergoing a rigorous 2 year University-examined training course to gain a Certificate in Scottish Studies. I also regularly update and enhance my skills through a programme of continuous professional development.
Having lived abroad and travelled extensively I know what it is like to arrive in a new country and I have high expectations of a tourist guide. I am mindful of this during preparations for every tour I guide. I pay great attention to detail and thorough preparation and forward planning make the trips memorable for clients and fun for me as well.
A sense of humour is essential and I never forget that it’s my clients’ holiday and that it’s my job to make their holiday the best and most memorable they have ever had. For every tour I take into account the group dynamics and find a balance to ensure that the tour is interesting for every member of the group. As a mother of three I know how important it is for children to have a good time on holiday, not only to have their knowledge broadened but also to have fun!
I take great pride in my knowledge of Scotland past and present and am proud of my connection with the Clan Ross through my mother. I have a love for Scotland and all that the country has to offer and the desire to impart my knowledge of Scotland to visitors in such a way that they, too will fall in love with this beautiful country and want to return.
