John Harbour

My full name is John Robert Mackay Harbour and I'm wearing the Mackay tartan. I am a Blue Badge guide and I offer guided tours of Scotland for groups of up to 7 people in my own luxury Mercedes VIANO. I travel all over Scotland and when you contact me we will work out a personal itinerary to ensure you get the best out of Scotland whether you are here for a few days or a few weeks.
My professional life was at sea and as a Commander in the Royal Navy, I’ve seen the world. From Rio to Australia and from the USA to Japan, I’ve made great friends along the way. I’ve witnessed history in the making, seeing South Africa during and after apartheid, and Berlin before and after the fall of the Wall. I’ve even welcomed HRH Prince Charles aboard my ships, HMS CHARYBDIS and LEWISTON, and served for a time with HRH Prince Andrew onboard HMS BRAZEN.
I am also a member of the Institute of Directors (IoD) and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI) This experience and background will ensure that you get a guide with experience in life as well as experience in touring, even to the most remote parts of Scotland. I look forward to sharing that with you.

My exclusive Scottish tours are intended for small parties - i.e. bespoke tours usually for families or groups of good friends. The maximum number of adults would normally be 4 - 7 to travel comfortably in my Mercedes VIANO although as I mentioned before I'd be delighted to host someone travelling alone, couples or groups of up to 7 as long as they are relatives or friends.

As soon as you make contact I will discuss in depth exactly what tours of Scotland you can experience. It may be that you already have firm ideas about what you want to see and do and I am more than happy to work with your Scotland itinerary. My most recent Eastern European visitors wanted to see Loch Ness over a 3 day period. I took them to Loch Lomond and Luss to see the Viking grave then lunch at the famous Loch Fyne Oyster Bar before heading up the dramatic mountainous Scottish West coast via Inverarary castle, Port Appin, Ballachulish and on to the Glen Garry Castle Hotel for the night. The following day we did Culloden battlefield, visited Blair Castle and got in some shopping at the House of Bruar. On the way back to Glasgow airport we popped into Scone Palace, the seat of Scottish Kings and visited a distillery. It may be that you simply wish to soak up the beauty and history of this land. Let your imagination wander - and I'll make suggestions when I know what your aspirations or desires are for your visit.

The first step is always to chat. Contact me, and we'll discuss what you want to do. Then I'll make it happen. Costings will depend upon itinerary length and distance travelled.
