My name is Steven Heddle and I am a qualified Green Badge Guide accredited by the Scottish Tourist Guides Association.
I work as a ‘step-on guide’, meaning that I will guide you in your own vehicle or hired vehicle, or lead you on a walking tour.
I am from Kirkwall and studied Physics at Aberdeen and Edinburgh Universities, gaining a BSc and PhD. After working in R&D, I returned to Orkney in 1999 and established a consultancy business.
I am passionate about my home islands, in terms of both their history and future. As leader of Orkney Islands Council from 2012 to 2017 I shared the 2013 Herald Local Politician of the Year Award and 2014 Scottish Public Service Award for Leadership, for my work on the Our Islands Our Future initiative to empower Scotland's island groups. I remain active in local politics and was appointed CoSLA Spokesperson for the Environment and Economy in May 2017, representing local government at a national level.
Through this work I have an extensive appreciation and knowledge of the islands, and enjoy sharing this with friends and visitors. Our archaeology, Viking heritage and central role in events of both World Wars means there is much to tell and much to see, well worth reflecting on at the end of a day with fine locally produced food and drink.
I'm a keen cyclist, and help organise the annual Orkney Rock Festival- one of the many festivals that take place throughout the year and make Orkney such a vibrant place to live, and to visit.
